Change in Elections Date SB 970

California law Senate Bill No. 970 (SB 970) was approved by the Legislature and signed into law in 2020 changing several sections of the California Elections Code to take effective Jan1, 2021. In particular, it mandates the City Council change the date for the City's general municipal election to June or November 2022.  In compliance, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2212 (PDF) changing the City’s General Municipal Election from March in even-numbered years to November in even-numbered years to coincide with statewide election dates. The elections will be consolidated and administered by the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder's office.  As a result of this change, current elected City officeholders will have their terms extended by eight months.

  • The General Municipal Election currently scheduled for March 8, 2022 (currently held by Council Members Peter, Chan, Hans Liang, City Clerk Vincent Chang, and City Treasurer Joseph Leon), will be held on November 8, 2022.

  • The General Municipal Election currently scheduled for March 5, 2024 (currently held by Council Members Henry Lo, Fred Sornoso, and Yvonne Yiu), will be held on November 5, 2024.
