iFixit Repair Kits
Borrow a Repair Kit for In-Library Use
Adult cardholders can check out an iFixit Repair Kit for use within the Library. The kits allow community members to prolong the life of their electronic devices, helping them save money and promoting sustainability. Kits were provided to the Library through the EmPOWERing Access program through Southern California Library Cooperative (SCLC).
Cardholders interested in borrowing a kit will be asked to sign a Library Repair Kit Agreement (PDF). To check kit availability, call the Reference Desk at (626) 307-1368.
Repair Kit Lending Program FAQs
What is an iFixit Repair Kit?
The iFixit Repair Kit is a portable electronics toolkit designed primarily for computer, smartphone, tablet and gaming repair. It contains all the tools needed for digital repairs, including a 64-precision-bit driver set, tweezers, flex extension, opening tools and an anti-static wristband. All toolkits come with a magnetic mat to help prevent small pieces from being lost.
Who can borrow a Repair Kit?
Adults aged 18 or older with a valid Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library card may check out a Repair Kit for in-Library use.
How do I check out a Repair Kit?
You can check out a Repair Kit from the first floor Reference Desk during Library hours. First-time Repair Kit users will be asked to sign a user agreement which will remain on file for any future checkouts. Repair kits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis, and holds may not be placed on them.
How long can I keep the Repair Kit?
You may use the kit within the Library until 30 minutes before closing time, regardless of what time you borrow it. Kits can only be used on the day they are borrowed and cannot be renewed.
Can the Repair Kit and magnetic mat be borrowed separately?
The Repair Kit and magnetic mat form part of a set and cannot be borrowed or returned separately.
How do I return a Repair Kit?
You must return the Repair Kit to a staff member at the Library's first floor Reference Desk. The staff member will check that all the parts are present before it is checked in.
What if I return a Repair Kit late, or lose or damage it?
If a Repair Kit and/or magnetic mat is not returned on the day that it is borrowed, the user may be asked to pay a replacement fee. Users may also be asked to pay a replacement fee if the Repair Kit, any part of the kit, or the magnetic mat, is lost or damaged. The replacement cost for a repair kit is $75. The replacement cost for a magnetic mat is $20.
Is there a charge for using the Repair Kit?
Borrowing and using the kit is free! However, if the kit or magnetic mat is lost or damaged, you may be asked to pay a fee (see above).
How do I use a Repair Kit?
Instructions on how to use the kits are available on the iFixit Repair Guides page. Please note that Library staff are not able to provide instructions on how to use the kit, and users make all repairs at their own risk.
